Play It Again, Han

freeplayfri

Hey there.  I haven’t done one of these in a while (and judging from the site traffic numbers, none of you seem to notice when I do skip a Freeplay Friday), but I received the X-Wing Miniatures game from a friend for Christmas, and I’m really enjoying it, so I thought I’d touch on it briefly.

Yes, I’m aware of just how staggeringly geeky this is, thank you. Although, come to think of it, I’m not sure quien es mas macho, Warhammer 40k or Star Wars.

There are 3 factions you can play, the Rebellion, the Empire, and Scum & Villainy.  Once you decide on a faction, you collect their ships and fly them around the table blowing up the other two factions as per some (relatively) simple rules.

Now I’ve a penchant for pirates, space or otherwise, so I’m naturally drawn to Scum & Villainy…

I’ve already put together a modest collection of Scum & Villainy ships/pilots, and I’ve been doing a bit of practice flights on the dining room table after Daphne has gone to bed.

That said, I don’t have an opponent, so I basically just drop a few Imperial automatons/Rebel zealots on the other side of the table, and then I dogfight and/or blast the hell out of them with Boba Fett…

and Bossk.

I’m doing this to get a basic handle on how the ships move, how combat works, the difference between pilots and their upgrades, some dogfighting tricks, etc.

Sadly, there’s not a single place within an hour drive where I can actually play the game, but hopefully I’ll find a game or two in while we’re at PAX South this year.

But that’s another Freeplay Friday post, I think.

Okay, see you next week.
